VUTRAX SOFTWARE ADVICE NOTICE 208 - 20 Jan 2001

No Underlined Characters in Menus and Dialogues

This note applies to Windows 2000, Windows ME, and subsequent issues.
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows NT3.51, and Windows NT4 are not effected.

Underlined keyboard Navigation characters do not by default appear in menus & dialogues for these operating systems. You may not realise that you can quickly navigate the menu system using characters designated in each menu item, or know which letters are available even if you know the feature exists.

These items are known variously in Microsoft parlance as Keyboard navigation indicators, just Navigation indicators, shortcuts (not to be confused with Shortcut in the start icon context), and hotkeys.

This effect is part of Microsoft's design for these operating systems - see Microsoft document reference Q223552 entitled Keyboard Navigation Indicators Are Not Present.

To enable the indicators you can do one of:-

  • Press the Alt key each time you want to see them.

  • On the Desktop Press the Right Button and select [Properties > Effects].
    Uncheck the snappily titled item
[Hide keyboard navigation indicators until I use the Alt key] and then click [OK].

Note: Vutrax could have forced this setting for you, but it is the sort of unexpected global change that we attempt to avoid.
